I spent this week with Tom Hennesy, at Colorado Boy pub and brewery, in Ridgeway, CO. Tom has helped more than 50 breweries, and brewpubs get up and running. We've come up with a solid plan, to take over an existing restaurant space, with an affordable brewhouse, how to manage the business, and brewed a batch of french saison. Tom also plugged me into his network of over 100 past students. Tom gave me a lot of confidence in my plan, now I feel like I have a definative direction to move in, and I'm really excited to get back and start making some progress.
Today was a big day for Birdboy Brewing. We now have our first significant piece of brewing equipment: a dairy tank from an Amish farm in Grabill, Indiana. It's a 300 gallon bulk milk tank that will act as our mash tun with the addition of a false bottom. It took a great deal of effort for the Amish family and me to hoist this thing up and out of a window, but we somehow managed it. I thanked them each with an Octoberfest which they greatly appreciated. We're excited see what new brews this new tank will make possible!
